Gateway Interviewers

The gateway interviewer provides a crucial service to the bureau, acting as the first point of contact for clients who use our service. Gateway interviewers make an initial assessment of clients’ needs, give out basic information to clients, make appointments for clients or refer clients to outside agencies.

Manchester CAB Requirements

The Gateway Interviewer’s duties are as follows:
  • To identify the nature of the client’s enquiry.
  • To assess the level of service required by the client.
  • To offer and explain information to clients.
  • To identify cases which require urgent action.
  • To liaise with bureau staff and make internal appointments where appropriate.
  • To refer or signpost clients to external agencies.
  • To maintain and update the bureau information system.

The Importance of Gateway Interviwers

Gateway interviewers offer a key service to clients by ensuring that bureaux are accessible to the community and that a level of service is offered which is appropriate to our clients’ needs.

The gateway interviewer role involves more interaction with clients than any of our other volunteering roles. The gateway interviewer needs to be able to be able to act on their own initiative and to be able to deal with sometimes stressful situations, for example large numbers of clients waiting to be seen .

This role is ideal for those looking for advice work experience, but who are not able to commit to being an advisor, for example because they are in full time education or employment.

As part of the selection process, applicants for this role will be assessed on:

  • Literacy skills
  • The ability to explain information to clients.
  • A commitment to the aims and principles of the CAB service.
  • Communications skills.
  • A willingness to be flexible.
